Amharic Bible Online & on Mobile: Read Scripture in አማርኛ
For Amharic-speaking believers, in Ethiopia, the diaspora, or anywhere Scripture in your heart language matters, having the Bible in አማርኛ on your phone changes daily reading. Daily Bible App includes a full Amharic Bible translation stored locally on your device. This article explains how to use it in the app, download it for offline reading, and compare Amharic with English. Note: this guide focuses on the mobile app; dailybibleapp.net does not currently offer a full Amharic Bible reader on the web.
Why read the Bible in Amharic?
Amharic (አማርኛ) is the working language of millions of Christians who want God's Word in the language they pray, think, and teach in. Reading in Amharic:
- Brings clarity, complex passages land more naturally in your first language.
- Supports family and community, read aloud or teach from a translation everyone understands.
- Honors bilingual study, many readers switch between Amharic and English to see nuance in both.
If you searched for amharic bible online, you may find web-based readers elsewhere. Daily Bible App's Amharic Bible is available in the Android app, a dedicated, offline-capable experience rather than a browser tab.
App-first: Amharic on mobile
We want to be direct: Daily Bible App delivers the Amharic Bible on Android, not as a full web-based Amharic reader on this website. The dailybibleapp.net site offers articles, guides, and information in English; the complete Amharic Scripture text, navigation, and study tools live inside the app.
That app-first approach has advantages:
- Ethiopic script (Ge'ez fidels) renders properly in a reader built for it
- Offline download, read Amharic without internet after the initial setup
- Integrated notes, highlights, compare mode, and text-to-speech alongside your Amharic reading
For bible app and offline bible app searches, the Android app is where Amharic reading happens.
The Amharic translation (local_amharic)
Daily Bible App includes a local Amharic Bible identified internally as local_amharic. In the translation picker it appears as:
- Language label: አማርኛ (Amharic)
- Version name: Amharic Bible
- Storage: bundled locally, the full text lives on your device, not on a streaming server
Because it is a local translation, book names, chapter navigation, and verse text display in Amharic throughout the reader. You get the complete Protestant canon, Old and New Testaments, navigable book by book.
How to select Amharic in the app
Switching to Amharic takes a few taps:
- Open Daily Bible App on your Android phone.
- Go to the Bible reader (tap Bible or Continue Reading from the home screen).
- Open Bible settings or the translation/version selector at the top of the reader.
- Find አማርኛ (Amharic) in the list of available translations.
- Select it. The reader reloads with Amharic book names and verse text.
You can also set Amharic as your default translation in settings so every new session opens in አማርኛ. The app UI itself supports multiple interface languages; you may prefer English menus with an Amharic Bible, or explore Amharic UI options where available.
Download Amharic for offline reading
The Amharic translation is stored locally as part of the app's Bible library, ideal for an offline bible app workflow. Once installed:
- Read any Amharic chapter without Wi‑Fi or mobile data
- Search and navigate within the downloaded Amharic text offline
- Add notes and highlights in Amharic passages, saved on your device
Manage all downloaded translations from the Downloaded Content screen in the app menu. If you also use other languages, download those versions while online so compare mode works offline too. See our offline Bible guide for full details.
Compare Amharic with English
Bilingual readers often want the same verse in Amharic and English side by side, especially for study, teaching, or language learning. Daily Bible App's Compare Versions feature aligns parallel text verse by verse.
To compare Amharic with English:
- Select Amharic (አማርኛ) as your primary Bible version.
- Open Compare Versions and choose an English translation, KJV, NIV, or another downloaded English Bible.
- Read the same chapter with Amharic on one side and English on the other.
Both translations must be available on your device for offline comparison. Download your preferred English version from Bible settings if you have not already. This parallel view is one of the most practical tools for Amharic-speaking readers who also work in English daily.
Notes, audio, and reading plans
Amharic reading is not isolated from the rest of the app. With Amharic selected, you can also:
- Highlight and bookmark Amharic verses for later review
- Write notes tied to specific Amharic passages
- Listen with text-to-speech: your device reads Amharic aloud (quality depends on available Amharic TTS voices on your phone; see our audio Bible guide)
- Follow reading plans: plan progress works with whichever translation you have active, including Amharic
- Continue where you left off: return to your last Amharic chapter with one tap
Whether you read Amharic exclusively or alongside English, the goal is the same: consistent time in Scripture in the language that speaks to your heart.
